The Only Yoga Mat Guide You Need
If your mat slips under a downward dog, no amount of intention will save the flow. We tested eight mats across grip, cushioning, weight and sustainability, and sweated on every single one.
Grip Is Everything
Natural rubber grips far better than most PVC when wet, but it is heavier and pricier. Closed-cell foam is light and cheap but turns to a slip-and-slide the moment your palms get damp. For hot yoga, rubber wins; for travel, foam is hard to beat.
| Mat | Material | Grip (wet) | Score |
|---|---|---|---|
| Natural rubber | Rubber | Excellent | 9.1 |
| Premium foam | TPE | Good | 8.3 |
| Budget foam | PVC | Poor | 6.5 |
Caring for your mat
Wipe after every session and avoid direct sun, which ages the surface and kills the grip. A mild soap and water spray is all you need.
Our Verdict
The natural rubber mat gripped perfectly even during a sweaty flow and still looks new after months of use. Worth the extra weight if you practise at home.
